I think it is cool that your children have passion for their personal space and want to be unique and creative with their rooms. Paint is cheap, have them be involved with the labor and give them room to be authenic. When they are grown and come back home to visit it will make good stories at holidays.
My feeling is this...it’s PAINT. If you don’t like it, PAINT OVER IT! You may find that a punch of color is something you love...and then get more daring in the rest of your house!
my 13 yr old painted one of her walls black. Like Daphne said, it can always be painted over.
I want my bedroom painted red and gold.
Color is awesome!

I think one wall painted red would be okay. All black would be too much IMHO.
I agree with MzTracy and Daphne that it’s just paint and can be painted over when they change their mind. My daughter went through the “red” phase and it was not so bad. There are some very pretty shades of red. She also wanted kind of a bright blue for the bathroom. Again, it was not so bad. Good luck with it! :)
I have a good friend whose mother painted her whole kitchen black...with white trim...the cabinets are white as well. She went in with some “red” accessories...and it really was a beautiful kitchen. Oh..and the windows had white plantation shutters...so black is a great color!
One red wall.....I say go for it! Like all have said...it’s only paint. That’s the beauty of paint.
Beauty is in the eye of the beholder...kids express themselves in so many different ways, and as the parent it is fun and rewarding to see that shine through.
It’s your kids’ rooms. Let them do what they want. It’s easy enough to paint over when they get tired of it or leave home.
My daughter wanted her room painted navy blue when she was about 12. I didn’t like the idea, but I caved in and bought the paint. It was fantastic.
I’m a big fan of deep dark rich colors. There are SO many gorgeous rich reds to choose from. I wouldn’t hesitate about black either. Go with a fairly glossy paint like a semi-gloss and it will reflect more light, making the room seem a little brighter than it would with a flat paint. And black is such a super easy color to accessorize.
Go for it. It’s a super easy, cheap way to make your kids think you‘re the coolest mom ever.

I have my front room with one wall painted in a real deep red and the other walls are taupe. It’s beautiful. I always get lot’s of compliments on the red. A lot of people are afraid of “color” but like the others said it’s only paint........re-paint if your not happy with it.
WHEN MY DAUGHTER WAS A TEENAGER SHE WANTED A BLACK AND WHITE ROOM.WE PAINTED HER WHOLE ROOM BLACK AND ONE ENTIRE WALL WAS PAINTED WITH BLACK CHALKBOARD PAINT.THIS WAY SHE AND HER FRIENDS COULD WRITE WITH CHALK ALL OVER THE WALL.THEY LOVED IT AND IT WASHED RIGHT OFF.EVERYTHING ELSE WAS WHITE TRIMMED IN BLACK. IT WAS KINDA COOL BUT ABSOLUTE HELL TO PAINT OVER..
It depends on what color red, A country red would be nice, that would look good on one wall. I am all for adding color to a wall. But black, Is he talking about having his whole room black? You know how hard thats going to be when It’s time to repaint that room If you decide to redo It a lighter color. Maybe one wall, but not the whole room. It’s nice though that you let your kids pick how they want their room painted, there the ones who are going to spend the majority of there time In there studying, Intertaining their friends, or just kicking back In there.
Good luck and hope they enjoy their new colors.
I think painting one wall red would be fine. Your daughter is just expressing herself thru color and that’s a good thing. The red will balance out her imagination and motivate her.
Now, not so sure, “I personally“, would like black, but if that is what your son wants, you should think about letting him express himself also.
I agree with Daphne, it’s just paint and you can always paint over it.
Have you thought about instead of using paint, using fabric instead? It would be a lot easier to take the fabric down.

Retired interior designer - I would go with a really dark blue - midnight - black is hard to pain and paint over. Black also being a very depressing color can effect your mood. I am always a bit nervous of red in a bedroom - red is not a very calm color and many people need a room to be rest full. Maybe a fun red bedspread
I hope this helps, paint is a very powerful medium.
