Christmas to us is family and some great food...we usually gather at my place or mom’s for dinner and spend the day together...this year we will be spending it at my new home on christmas eve...I will be cooking the turkey and everyone else has been assigned a dish to bring...on Christmas day we will all head over to my mom’s and spend a day hanging out watching movies and eating plenty of leftovers...this is new to us and we just wanted to try something different.
When I was not living so close to home we still made sure it was a family celebration...and not forgetting those unfortunate enough to have to spend christmas alone we always made sure there was enough food for everyone...I remember one christmas we had about 12 extra people at our table...
Many years ago when I first was on my own I remember spending a christmas by myself...I remember cooking up a canned ham, mashed potatoes and creamed corn...I remember how lonely it was and I felt very sad...I promised myself I would never feel like that again and I never have...so that is why I share my holidays with anyone and everyone who is not as fortunate as I to have family close by.
Well Christmas is family time but it is also my birthday. My plans are still in formation for my birthday. I know that a friend is taking me out to dinner maybe Christmas Eve or the 26th for my Birthday. It starts with Christmas Eve Midnight Mass. Then Christmas day with family over at Judith’s home. Then Christmas night a birthday celebration at my home.
It is a day of reflection on the blessed birth of Jesus..we say prayers and reflect on the past year, make breakfast together, play our favorite Christmas music, open gifts, make a toast to a happy and healthy new year and either relax and play cards or games and watch movies through the day or get ready to travel to a family member’s home..such beautiful memories!
Christmas at our house is family getting together to celebrate the birth of Jesus. Growing up my parents always sat us down to read the Christmas story from the Bible and prayed with us as a family before we were allowed to open our gifts. The wanted us to always remember what Christmas was really all about. I took up that same tradition with my kids.
