I am facing a hysterectomy. The surgeon is unsure whether he can do it vaginally and may have to do an abdominal hyst if the uterus is too big. So, I have a quoted recovery time of three weeks OR four to six. I need an idea of how much help I’ll need around once getting home from the hospital from women who have had both procedures. Will I need my friends to sleep over the first few nights? Will they need to just stop by? Will I be able to cook for myself? Will I have to sleep in a recliner? Anything that took you by surprise? How has sex been since you had it? I will be keeping the ovaries - YAY!
You lucky woman!!! You’ll love being a Hysta-Sista!!! I’ve been one for 18 years!
My hys was done vaginally and the ovary I had left was also taken. My ovaries were what was giving me problems. But, IMO, you should have yours removed , too. Why leave them when all they’ll be able to do is give a chance to have problems with them?
I doubt you’ll need anyone to sleepover. Just be there to help you the first week alot! And after that maybe just 2 or 3 times a week to do things for you. You can’t do any lifting! And that means laundry! Even though you’ll feel like you‘re upto doing things, your body isn’t ready for that! It takes the full 6 weeks and then some to recover from this surgery. And you will regret over doing it. I know this from experience!
Feel free to send me a PM and ask more Q’s. And good luck with your surgery!
Oh, and actually, sleeping in a recliner will not be good for you at all!! They are too difficult to get out of. No straining! I know I have a hard time getting our recliner to close while I’m in it. I have to get up then kick it with my foot. LOL
I believe I stayed in bed the first week, and after that was back and forth between the couch and the bed.
Thanks! The surgeon said I have a good 7-8 years of hormones left in the ovaries so I should keep them. I am fine with that. They don’t cause a lot of problems. I like the protective factor of the estrogen on my heart and bones anyway....not looking forward to HOT flashes.
Yes, been there and Terma is right about it all..unfortunately I went through three abdominal procedures and in the beginning they left the ovaries, but I developed a huge ovarian tumor (benign, thank God)..and the doctor left the other..lo and behold three years later the other had to be removed because of the same thing...so, needless to say, in my case, everything should have been taken from the beginning..I wish you well!

Knocking on wood, I haven’t experienced this, but I am wishing you the very best and a very speedy recovery.
I had my hysterectomy in Nov 2009 and it was the best decision of my life!!!
The first week my husband was home and cooked my meals for me. You realy want to rest and take your pain meds ON TIME!!! This will make your recovery so much better. I even set my phone to wake me up in the middle of the night. I had my meds and water right near the bed. Do not try and be a hero and say oh I can take the pain. Take your meds that is what they are there for.
The second week, I made my own meals. I use the crockpot a lot for meals so I was not on my feet as much. The crockpot was a Godsend!!!
I was able to drive the 3rd week and I was like FREEDOM! But dont over do it. Allow your body to heal. I was out for 7 weeks.
Lastly the best advice I got from a friend was to sleep as much as possible. My friend told me not to fight it because your healing is in your sleep. She was so right. I enjoyed my sleep, stayed off my feet and I did not have any problems.
Sex is GREAT!!!! You never have to not have it because it is that time of the month and because you have cramps.
You never have to worry about wearing white either and that felt great.
I still have my ovaries because I was only 45 and my doctor said the same thing, no need to take them out. This way you wont go through menopause earlier.
I wish you the best and a speedy recovery.
I had mine in October of 2009. My boyfriend rented me a lift recliner for a week. There was no way I could walk up the stairs to sleep and getting up from the sofa was hard too. Listen to your doctor about how much you can lift!! My boyfriends daughter had her hysterectomy in May and just had to have a bunch of hernias repaired. Take your pain meds on a schedule for the first week then if you feel better just take them as needed. Do not drive till your doctor says its okay too. Sex is so much more enjoyable now then ever before but I did find that I am a bit drier but there are some really good lubes for that. Rest relax and do not push yourself.

Thanks y‘all...hardest part is not knowing what I will wake up with...abdominal or vaginal....the difference is 3 or 6 week recovery. I hate being out of work that long. I will sleep, take it easy, not lift and call upon lots of support from friends. Thanks so much!
