When my daughter had her car wreck, I was in the ER at the local hospital about an hour or more. Her dad was there longer. Then we spent hours and hours and hours in the ER at the big hospital they sent her on to. She went into the ER at 9 am and didn’t go in for surgery until 11 pm. 
For my own issues, I’ve never spent more than 2 hours or so.

Our son was there recently and we spent roughly three hours and according to one of the docs that was pretty good..it is troubling that people have to wait so long in these emergency rooms, wonder what the new health reform will bring!
I ended up in the ER quite a few more times than I care to mention. Most lasted about 10-12 hrs. 
Several hours on several occasions through the years with my asthma.

The last time i was in the ER room I was involved in a car accident, I cannot remember how long but I’m sure it was too long.
It is really tough on the nurses who work in the ER, always running around.
I know it depends on the time of day and which day - for instance if it’s after 10pm at the weekend your in for the long haul due to the drunks, fights etc; but the other year I broke my toes and went straight in and out - they now have a separate area for children as they are priority.
But of you go to ER you know you’ll wait
Went in at 2:00 am...and ended up staying in the hospital for 10 days...had a gall bladder attack...and was in sooo much pain...but they couldn’t operate because I also had an infection in my pancreas...finally about a week later they were able to operate as my temperature finally went down...longest 10 days of my life...
The night I broke my leg, there was an ice storm, so there was a LOT of people packed in the waiting area. It ended up being about 4 1/2 hours before they got me back to a room where I waited about another hour and a half for Dr, then another hour for X-ray. All in all I spent about 7 1/2 hours waiting to get splinted.
LOL soooo much time the staff said they would keep a special room for me waiting ... for the next round....
