Yesterday I asked a question about government assistance.
Today I would like to know in what ways should there be changes?
Again BE NICE please!
I believe they should check up on the recipients to make sure they still/do not require it. Also, IMO, I think if people (and there’s all kinds on it) should be required to take drug test’s because I know down here, as mentioned earlier, people sell their Lone Star Card for say 50 cents on the dollar to get cash to buy illegal drugs. And our gov’t is paying for that.
Its hard to say in these times. But there should be some kind of limits of how long you can be on it. You should also have a way to help those get off. But at the same time don’t penalize those who are trying to get off and still need help. Example: My sister was getting assistance for daycare for her 3 kids while she was working a very low paying job. She was given a $0.25 raise and lost all child care assistance. Instead of saying you no longer can have this much but you can have this much she was denied all child care and was told that she should be able to afford it. She had to refuse the raise that she did need so that she could continue to work.
Oh I should add after my divorce, I had been laid off and was cleaning homes/business’s for a living and had an unexpected surgery. Obviously I had no insurance. While in the hospital they sent a social worker in and asked if I wanted help. Duh! Of course I accepted. They put me on medicaid for 3 months only. They also asked if I wanted food stamps but I turned that down. They covered my hospital bill but after the 3 months, that was it.
Well, I for one am tired of my tax dollars paying for young girls to have babies. We pay for their prenatal care and after the baby is born we pay for their health care. And then we pay for the mom to go to college to better herself and we pay for daycare for the kid. And all the while she is living with her boyfriend who is holding down a pretty good job, but they refuse to get married because she will loose her welfare.
If these girls want to have babies, they need to pay for it themselves or get help from their family. Otherwise they need to put the child up for adoption.
I agree with Momofthree, there should be some way to give partial assistance as needed rather than all or none.
Tulip
Tuliplady, the girl here at work, her daughter just had her 2nd child and had medicaid pay for all of that too. They put her on for 3 months but the kids are on for good. She is also married and neither her or her husband work. What kind of example is that setting for your children????
I am from New York State originally and according to my sister who still lives there, generations of families continue to get government assistance whether they need it or not..the laws governing that are not strict enough, therefore, many people collect for long periods of time and in many cases are physically able to work and I believe each state implements different rules, correct me if I am wrong.
I like the idea of partial assistance and some form of monitoring needs to take effect, perhaps a visit from the office of Social Services every three months to see how things are progressing and along with that if the person is able to work, job applications should be brought with them and filled out while the social worker is there..might be far-fetched, but there has to be a first step.
So how should it be changed?

I think like Mary said that the social services come by the home every 3 months and check up on them. Sure there are plenty who are desperately in need but then there are the ones who take total advantage of it.
I don’t really know this...... But how does govt housing come into it?
