    • My doc recently told me that blood tests for menopause are very inaccurate due to the flucuations in estrogen each woman has.  IE - there is no ‘average’ woman when it comes to estrogen so trying to figure out if you are above or below average estrogen is not very accurate.

    • Trudy is right on this. My doctor told me that I can have a blood draw several times in one day and get readings that are all over the map. I think a saliva test is pretty accurate but not 100% sure.

I did have my estrogen tested a couple of years ago as part of a routine exam and she said that it was low enough and my periods were irregular enough to say I was indeed in perimenopause. But as far as protection from pregancy goes, you still need it until you are well past menopause. I had a tubal ligation to be on the safe side a few years ago.

I had a blood test for it years ago, and my doctor said yes I’m definitely in it. Because I was also having hot flashes and all the other indications, I kind of knew that already, but the doc’s confirmation made me feel less nuts.

    • I just had a test last week, but they called it FSH levels. And they look for a high result of this being release because of the lower estrogen levels. Mine was high, indicating it confirmed the doctor’s opinion that I was indeed in premeno, because of my symptoms.  I’ve been using incorrect words, like vacuum when I mean sweep. some night sweats, some missed periods and emotional!  I’m only 44, but my sister who is 9 years older said she’s guessing she’s been like this for about 9 years.  Ugh!  She tried lots of natural ways, but they seem to just work for temporary. She chose not to go with hormone replacement therapy because of the side effects, but is taking a very low dose antidepresent.  My follow up appt. to talk about options is next Friday.  Hope to hear more. TM

    • yes, my FSH levels were way over the top...even the doc was surprised and the high reading.....but being on birth control has helped me to get thru probably alot of the menopause issues........so hoping that I breeze thru the rest.  sleep like a baby still, not really havin hot flashes, moods seem ok.  havent had period .due to birth control for 3 1/2 years.   dont kno if it would come back or not....

    • Yeah, my cycle has not changed, nor have I expereinced any other pre-menopause syptoms as  of yet. Annie 123 is very correct on the birhtcontrol issues, my Grandmother had a baby at 50 years old. My mother did not go through memopuase until she was 52.
