    • I didn’t think we should have to pay for having our house on fire put out, but if the area we live in has a annual fee... I’d pay it! Geez, I hope these people had home insurance!

    • We do pay.  It’s called taxes.  Is this fire dept not supported by local tax dollars?

When we get our property tax statement, all the things those tax dollars go for are listed, fire, amulance, school, etc

    • I think it’s awful!!! Even if you had to pay...they should have never let those people’s house burn.  They could have put it out FIRST...THEN hit them with a bill!  You don’t pay...you go to jail..or we put a lien on your house...or whatever...but to let someone’s house burn over $75????  That is just plain WRONG!!!

If I had been there I would gladly given them $75 on the spot..and said...“here...here is your damn money...put the fire out first!!”

I get so mad every time I hear a news segment about it or read about it.  Your state/city tax dollars should be funding this and your police department..over everything!

    • So before they head out to put a fire out they check to see if the taxes have been paid? Then they show up to not put the fire out? I think it is crazy...and as Tulip said...TAXES.

    • It is sad, Vikki, and really sad about the animals. Here our property taxes pays for the fire department protection, but that’s not done everywhere. I totally believe in “defendable space” around a home living in the woods and hired someone to do it this year. Lucky for those people they had a motor home not destroyed by the fire for shelter.

    • This maes me wonder.... When I lived in the Chattanooga area we had the option to donate to the Fire Dept. If we had not “donated” and had a fire would they have let it burn???
And there was people there offering to pay yet the fire dept let it go. I’m sure there is another side I just haven’t heard it yet.

    • It’s one thing for the fire department to not respond but to just stand there and watch it burn???? That is heartless. I think they should have done their job and collected a large fine from him afterward.

    • Great points Mamapan! I totally get it but there is no way to prevent a car accident by calling someone to stop it...but you can a fire.  I say put it out...and then collect a huge fine or go to jail.  You are right...if this is what is in place then they knew about it. I just think  it’s called doing the right thing.

Now....if these people have been sent numerous bills for payment and have ignored them...then that is a different ballgame.  But...they did let animals die in that fire...not they need to risk human lives to save animals but if they can they should.  It’s a fine line....but it all goes back to...the government having their priorities in the wrong order. Protection and fire protection should be at the top of the list with cities, counties, and states.  What are the taxes going towards is my question?

    • Good point Mamapan!

However I still don’t think they should have let it burned.... Give the guy heavy fines if need be.

Believe me I am not dogging on the firemen. They have a tough job without it being made harder by having to stand by and watch a fire. They shouldn’t be put in the position of having to make that decision at all. They should just be allowed to focus on what they were trained for....putting out fires!

    • I guess I meant to say that the firemen should NOT have to deal with the politics of it. Leave that up to the city to fine the guy....It is possible for the city to also put a lien on the property too.

    • Well I think it’s BS!! They let 4 animals be burned alive.
It’s their job, sue them for the money after. 75.00 was NOT worth the pet murders and the loss of a house.

Ditto Vikki firemen should NOT have to deal with the politics of it. Leave that up to the city to fine the guy  They have  job to do, FIGHT fires!!!

    • I think it’s BS the homeowners didn’t think about the consequences of Not paying the $75 annual fire protection fee that would have saved their animals lives. When my X refused to
pay the home insurance, which is more than I get in spousal support a month, I paid it! His attitude was so what if a forest fire takes out the house & shop, and my opinion is... What a Dumb Ass!

Maybe those homeowners had an attitude like the X and could have saved their animals lives by paying such a small amount of money for fire fighting protection.
