This is regarding my husband. He loves to eat and lately, when he eats at night, he gets really bad heartburn and/or his stomach gets upset. This has happened several times and it has me a bit concerned. I told him he should go see a doctor but he said he just needs to stop eating at night and that he knows a lot of guys with this issue. Is this a common issue? He’s only 38.
Diane Please tell him to take this more seriously. Heartburn like this can lead to GERD which can erode the lining of the esophagus. Erosion of this type can lead to esophageal cancer.
Is there a history of heartburn in his family? Has he had any problems with heartburn in the past or in any other circumstance?
I’m sensitive to this kind of thing because my dad had heartburn all his life. But his life was cut short at 59 - esophageal cancer.
Here’s an article on the subject

What about the gallbladder. About 10 years ago my husband was getting problems of heartburn and upset stomach. It lasted a long time until I finally convinced him to see a dr. and he had gallbladder issues and had to have surgery. He was about 38.
acid reflux, stomach ulcer, there can be many reasons for this and yes it is fairly common

Has he tried something like Prilosec? If that doesn’t help, then definitely time to see a doctor.
What Cynthia said above is very true, I used to work in an Ear, Nose, and Throat office, and besides smoking and tobacco usage, GERD was the suspect for throat cancer. At the very least, why isn’t he taking an over-the-counter heartburn medication, like Prilosec or something? My guess is, he hasn’t heard about the dangers involved. But now you know :)
Take care.
agreed and working in a doc’s office afforded me opportunity to see this turn into cancer in some instance. I tell my bf often to get a check up because this heartburn is more serious than just popping a tums.
He should talk to his doctor. Maybe hes eating late at night? and then laying down, that will cause acid reflux/heartburn also. Hope he gets it checked out.
He does need to take very serious! In the meantime tell him to eat yogurt at night and it should help settle things.
