How much would you put up with, before deciding to move?
I’m grateful for my cute apartment in a small NH town. Nice landlords, heat, great neighbors, no one complains about my bird shrieking (and for a tiny bird - a conure - this one can blow your eardrums out).
But I’m noticing mold behind, around, and under the tub, and under the bathroom floor; small signs of water leaking from upstairs (tiny, slow leaks, nothing huge), wood rotting around the doorjams, and each night a parade of mice marching through the walls.
I don’t want to be part of any mouse murdering, and I’m not that scared of them - and when the mold breaks through in the bathroom it comes up easily with bleach.
Am I being ungrateful and unreasonable in thinking of moving? What would you do?

Thanks, Tracy. I did have them bring in the plumber a couple of times, but bless his heart he doesn’t seem to have the touch. But yes, I could try again and just have him come back until he gets it. Thanks for your input!
talk to them about the mold specifically. That is something they need to take care!
Yes definitely the mold since that could make you sick. And with your cat recovering too it could make kitty sick.

Can I just say mould is dangerous it’s a silent health hazard and can be very bad for your chest and lungs - so do get this checked out

I don’t know, Suzann. I would likely be looking around for a new place without the mold and leaks and noisy mice in the walls of this place. The mold being the biggest issue. And if the door jams are rotting (at the bottom of them on the floor?) that means they get wet from underneath or around the doors, it’s been going on for a long time.

How cheap is your rent? Is another place going to cost you a lot more? Sounds like you’ve got a great place except for a couple minor issues.

You all bring up excellent points. Eva, it’s a big Victorian house that was converted into 9 apartments. So you’ve really got their number as far as being perceived as an irritant, especially since I pointed out the leaks and under-the-floor-mold to them once, and they didn’t want to know about it. My landlords are really nice, but they‘re both quite elderly and I don’t know if they can deal with that much.
CathieB, yes, the door jams are rotting at the bottom of the floor.
And Tulip, you’ve got a good point because this was the least expensive place I could find this close to Boston. I think I now know why the rent was so cheap!!!!
But again, you guys are the best, because now I have some bearing on the situation, some pro’s and con’s. Thank you so much!
I had mold exposure after a flood and I had a lot of medical treatments and even sinus surgery to cope with after. Please do not treat it litely, notify your landlord. But for it to be in that condition he was already aware of problems previously. If he fails to respond right away I would move out. Mold and mouse can produce serious health issues and it is not worth it.
Kmarie, I’m sorry that happened to you. Thank you for sharing it with me. I’m going to drive around the next few days and see what other apartments are out there.
Yes, I’ll let the landlords know - they‘re in Florida, but they answer my emails. Still, as many of you have said, the mold and mouse droppings have evidently been there for quite some time. I’ll let the landlords know so they can fix it up for the next tenant, but I think they’ll have to rip out the tub and the bathroom floor.
