Q & A

I’m going nuts because this girl at work is sick!  Would you tell someone who comes in sick to leave and get to a Dr?

    • She has been coughing like crazy every day and I’m about to pull my hair out!  I just went back and told her she needs to go to a Dr. and get some cough medicine with codiene in it to relax her lungs and help her get over that cough.

She said she’s taking her friends medicine.  I said “well it’s not working“.  She has done this several times, she get’s sick and comes to work but won’t go to the Dr. for it.  And, yes she has good insurance.tongue out

    • This time of year, I’m always working around sick people.  Almost all my co-workers are smokers and if they get any sort of illness they are hacking up a lung for weeks.  I hate listening to it, but on the other hand, I don’t want to work their shift while they stay home.

    • I’m with Annie and Tracy.  Myself and some of my co-workers have coughs that last for weeks. Unfortunately, many times cough medicine and the Dr. doesn’t help, so it has to run its course.

Perhaps you can tell your co-worker that you are concerned about her sickness and to go see a Dr. because you care. If she does and she’s still hacking, it’s important to show compassion instead of annoyance.

    • I agree with you about this Angel, there are some people who refuse to take care of themselves.  I do understand that a cough can linger, but there are ways to keep one’s self healthy and most young people don’t have the maturity to understand that...I am fortunate to have a son that cares a great deal about his health and when he is sick takes the necessary steps to get better...give her a box of tissues and some sanitary wipes and instruct her to keep things clean.estatic

    • I’d send her home and tell her to see her doctor! She needs a doctor to determine if she has bronchitis, pneumonia or TB (that’s going around again). I’d definitely want her out of the office so others weren’t exposed to her.

    • I had to take off Tuesday because I was sick, ran through an entire half box of tissues. I work in healthcare and around doctors and nurses; believe me they don’t take care of themselves either. My problem is not the smokers, it’s the people with small children because the kids are walking germs. So if someone’s sick the right thing to do is take care of it at home because if they are at work, they are spreading their germs to their coworkers who may not be as strong and develop something more serious. Paper, paper clips, computer keyboards and the mouse, copier and phone buttons are items of “spread.” I have given people packages of Theraflu and Sambucol to help them knock out their colds because ‘tis the season to get pneumonia!

    • I had the flu about two weeks ago and still have a lingering cough. however I do bring cough drops with me to work and take cough medicine during the day which helps me to not be so annoying to people at work. I know how obnoxious it is listening to people cough constantly and there are those who do come to work when they are sick...with more than just a cough...that angers me. tongue out

Id express concern for her and the others and ask her to please see a doctor if its continuing and advise her that her friends meds might be doing more harm than good.

    • I’d send her home! If she’s too dumb to see a doctor for real treatment and is worse, she’s a hazard in the work environment. At least ask her to wear a N95 face mask to protect her co-workers as an option to stay or Go Home! I bet she wouldn’t opt for wearing the mask.

    • Like Diane, we have parents that bring their kids sick and our supervisors wonder why we‘re calling in sick, we have a child that has had a cough for over a month and we keep telling the parent that he needs to be taking to the dr.. their response is that he is teething & they give him over the counter medicine... HELLO!! that’s NOT going to help..
We’ll it’s going back around again, I came home early from work cause I started getting sick and I called in today..
Don’t think it’s gonna stop anytime soon tongue out
