Q & A

I have the boss from hell. I had a great job in the insurance business then the economy sank us and the business closed. I was there 8 years. I finally landed a job in the engineering field as the office manager. The owner is so moody that I think he’s bipoliar or something,he is fine one moment and not the next. I try to stay to myself.

    • So sorry this is going on Tammy.

Keep your chin up and in 2011, start looking for something else if you can.

    • Yikes! I used to have a manager like that (she actually inspired me to go into management so I could control my environment)I used to buy her a snickers bar in the afternoon because I thought she was having an energy dip.

My suggestion is to talk to the person in a non threatening manner. You could say that you notice that this person gets upset and you would like to help alleviate any problems. What can you do to help?
Obviously you have to be careful when it comes to the owner/boss but if you put it in terms of what can you do to help make the biz better and relieve some of his/her stress that should help.

      Good Luck!

And I am sorry you are going thru thatheartbreak

    • No need to take the abuse. Even though the economy is shaky, businesses always need someone to run the office. Update your resume and get on out of there. Onward and upward.

    • I had a job that I absolutely Loved, and my boss sometimes would bellow at me and I’d just bellow back at him. He’d camly ask, “Is this one of those times I’m wrong and you‘re right?” Yes! Not all of the time though and It was a few years into the job before I had the “balls“.

He was Italian and Italian men are emotional and explosive at times when things go wrong, and it was a restaurant where things go wrong.

I had lots of “jobs” and the best ones were with my being able to figure out my boss. If you don’t have an understanding of your boss and where they coming from, and you Really need the job.... I don’t recommend getting back in their face. Find out your value to your employer first!

Working for others is a relationship. Expect one from your’s. And best of luck to you!

      Cathie

    • Life is too short to put up with abusive/rude/moody people- I would say move on ASAP don’t let this carry over in the new year!  If you need to get a job temporarily in another industry such as retail I would say GO - 4 - IT just to have peace of mind.  Its not healthy to live like this daily...

All the best- in the NEW YEAR!!

    • Welcome to the club...I feel your pain as I also have a boss from hell! She’s a bully of the worse kind, she’s rude, obnoxious, a liar, etc. I could go on and on. I’m sorry you have to deal with a boss from hell and I hope 2011 brings better things for you. I love the work I do so I don’t plan on leaving my job I am just hoping she leaves...she isn’t well liked in my office so I’m praying for a miracle that she will either quit or get fired. Until then I will find a way to deal with it. Good luck to you Tammy! happy
