Q & A

I need some true advice. I am feeling a little lost in life at the moment.  I am married to a Wonderful man we would do anything for each other. We are both 7 years clean from drugs. We have a great life and i love my job.
I am just the most unorganized person on earth and i need help.  I have tried to become more responsible with my money and also keep up with my part of the bills but i just keep screwing it up. I always seem to get each one paid right before shut off, but i would really like some tough advise on how to get myself on a better road this year.

    • I would start with checking out website from Suze Orman or Gail Vaz-Oxlade, or their books, they have great information that has helped me become more organized in staying on time. I do online bill pay and that helps alot too.

    • Well in my view your about 90% there by admitting you need help.
Have you thought of doing a very easy monthly plan in say three coloured pens so red is out going green is in coming and what is left over you write in black so you can see how much comes in monthly - what you have to pay out monthly and also divide up your 1/4 bills so you know how to add them to your budget for the month estatic

    • I’m not sure I can add much but I have somethings that have helped me in other areas.

I had a couple of bills that I had trouble paying on time...I don’t know what was going on...but I got real angry about it because I pay my bills once per month prior to doing anything else with the money. But my Dish bill was one of them. They kept calling and I was never actually late but I think it wasn’t in their system and they continued to give me a friendly reminder call. I finally pay a little more than I owe each month to keep them from calling. UGGGG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I have a few tricks I do to save money.

When I payoff a long-term big payment I try to actually put it into my savings account.

Sometimes if I want to buy a new shirt or something, I decide not to do so and put it into savings.

When I deposit a check into my account I might subtract 50.00 when I write it down in my check book.

I also have some other money in there that  I write off as zero. In case I forget to write down an amount in my register or something.
      CCards?
I didn’t have one for over twenty-two years of my adult life. Had a zero balance for all the time after that until I got a job change. Yikes.

I actually looked at what I owe on a cc  and admitted that I was paying too much in interest.

I owed just a little more than one year on a vehicle.  I went to a credit union and combined the two debts for less than my vehicle payment is each month and am paying 60% LESS in interest for the same time period.

    • I’ve gotten in the habit of paying my bills as soon as I possibly can after I get them.  I got one today that will have to wait till payday, but I have a spot I put things like that and when payday gets here, I know to check that spot for any bills.

I’ve also starting paying a lot of bills online.  I don’t have to worry about being out of stamps or getting to the post office.  It’s also way cheaper than writing a check!

    • I use my web bill pay thru my bank for all bills. It’s free (no stamps or envelopes). Most of my bills are paperless and the ebill goes to my bank. I get notices from my bank along with reminders to pay. My favorite parts are that I can schedule my payments, forget about and have accurate tracking of what and when it’s been paid.

I think you got some great tips from the ladies you just need to find a system that will work for you.

can’t forget to pay them. I do a monthly budget a month ahead and as I pay bills I check them off.

It’s like I have given up, sometimes I get the bills and don’t even open them. I wonder if it is a form of depression I am going through.

    • It could be depression? Do you not want to be in charge of your finances and wish there was someone else to handle it for you? If you‘re on a really tight budget, there’s ways to cut costs, still live well and get them dang bills paid on time.

      Wishing you the best.

    • Anon~ it is definitely a time to ask for help! Go to your doctor, friends a family member...what ever it takes. An accountant may be the ticket too. :) I know things aren’t hopeless, tho they may seem so. And it’s not time to give up, but time to take charge. Asking for help is a way to take charge!

I really need help, I do know how to work with my finances, I need to get better so I can be ok for my retirement time.  I need to move from where I live and I’m so afraid because I can’t ever work with this bill, how I would be able to pay a higher rent.

The only thing keeping me up, is God!
