I saw this initiative by the mayor of Detroit
Abandoned houses! Blighted neighborhoods! It all sounds so sexy thanks to a revitalization initiative put in place by Detroit Mayor Dave Bing, who’s incentivizing prospective buyers with $150K in renovation money, should they choose to scoop one of these properties off the market. As part of Bing’s program, police officers willing to move to Detroit only have to put $1K down, and college grads get $2,500 in rental money and a $20K forgivable loan if they do indeed buy something.
What do you think of this as a way of regenerating blighted areas?

Would you move to an area like this with help if you needed a home?
If I still lived there I would!!! Detroit has some beautiful old homes and with a little work they could be restored. I would even consider buying, fixing up and renting out if I lived there and could oversee things.
I love Detroit

I thought it was a great idea and I loved who he was offering people like police officers and nurses who work essential services but have low pay help on the housing ladder. Plus who would mess in a area populated by police officers ..
True you would think. The cops I know there live on the very edges of the city. So hopefully this would encourage some good things.

I hope if this is a success that more cities will follow - just looking at what is happening you guys seem to have taken a battering on repossessions due to this sub- prime lending and of course the very poor are always affected .....
It sounds interesting. Last year I read about how a group of artists was taking over a neighborhood in Detroit. They formed their own little community and would exchange renovation services.
