If you had to make a choice between these two, which would you choose and why? To live somewhere where your bills are cheaper but your work commute is long (about an hour and close to 50 miles one way) or to live somewhere where your bills are more expensive but your work commute is shorter and there are more opportunties for work?
I ask this question because we are contemplating a move that will bring us back closer to the city and would potentially give me more opportunities. Also, right now, I’m the only one who is working in our household.
I loved my commute.... gave me time to transition between worlds.
However I am all for the city living!

100 miles a day for five days times a speed limit of 65 per hour taking into unforeseen things that’s and 90 min drive min per day 450 mins per week min that’s 7 and a half hours a week min in your car. Just that alone is alot of time out of your week plus the stops or errands you do on way home add that to your work week of min 40 hours and any over time
That would burn me out. My adverage work day is 9.5 hours and I drive now tops 15 min to and from work so I vote for shorter drive time

i vote for shorter drive time, and more work opps, and to be honest although burn out driving is a consideration, i think deep down you would end up being resentful losing all that time away from your kids, who are the real reasons behind your thoughts...life is short it will all work out good luck and God bless with your descions
I live in the Chicagoland area. it is nothing for anyone around here to travel into Chicago for work. Some drive others take the train. When I did have to travel in to Chicago it took some time, I took the train spent the time on the train reading, got to my destination just fine. So if I had to do it again I would. But I would commute taking the train in.
Shorter commute having done the whole long commute and short I would always opt for the shorter might be on the surface more expensive but the quality of life is better plus as Eva says wear and tear on the car and gas etc you really are no better off and a lot more stressed - also if work opportunities then in this climate that would be my major consideration
For a full time job and being a mom, a long commute won’t really pay for itself, in my opinion. Myself, I didn’t like living far from my job though I did it a few times. And that was when gas was really cheap compared to now and I made good money.

I’ll take cheaper bills any day!

I’d prefer shorter commute and more opportunities for work. In my younger years I commuted by bus to downtown for about 1 hour each way. Getting up extra early and coming home late was not an enjoyable life.
My workplace is just a short drive and that’s the way I like it.
Shorter commute and more opportunities. Might be cheaper with the long commute but you can always use the more opportunities work wise to make ends meet. If I had children I would want to be able to spend more time with them.
A short commute and more opps...when I worked at our local hospital and our son was young, it was much easier to get back and forth to work because hub and I shared a vehicle..he worked day shift at his job which was close, I worked evening shift..not a lot of money at the time, but no stress.
