Sisterhood of the Traveling Bracelet

By Stephanie Shkolnik

Who says traveling is only for people?

San Diego, California (August 25, 2009)—Women on have created virtual relationships online. Yet, with thousands of women spread across the world, its difficult to connect often and in one place. The members started a sisterhood of their own that would require traveling.
Collectively, the women came up with a solution to connect with each other offline. An online discussion initiated by Jenz41 led to the creation of the traveling bracelet, which travels amongst Fabulously40 women all over the states and overseas.

The bracelet was designed by member Mz. Tracy, who was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis in 1997 and was inspired to start her own jewelry line. She provided a bracelet for the group, attaching one red heart charm at the beginning of its journey, which symbolized the love behind their friendship circle.

After the bracelet was mailed off to Jennifer, she added a journal that would travel the country alongside the bracelet, tracking its whereabouts, those who have worn the bracelet, and the memories they have had wearing it.

Jenz41 states, "I remember the winter months last year when this all started- if any of us were able to be online on Fabulously40, we were. Day in, day out. It was very interesting to see how close we'd all become and how great the friendships became. We really do care about what's going on in each other's lives here, just like sisters. The bracelet has connected us in a special way."

Today, the bracelet has reached over thirty women nationwide, picking up a new charm in every city. Member Termagsea took the bracelet to see Elvis in Memphis, celebrating her 25th Wedding Anniversary. She added a Martini charm expressing, "I picked this charm because my profile picture has almost always been a woman in a martini glass. I knew that the women would be able to identify me as soon as they saw that charm."

The journal will be re-traveling back to each Fabulously40 woman so they can see where the bracelet has gone and what it has experienced, being worn by women from all walks of life with one thing in common- celebrating midlife on was founded in 2006 to provide women 40 and beyond with a safe and secure environment where they can interact with others alike, be open to asking real women for advice and support, and gain access to thousands of resources—all from the comfort of their own home.

    • This is a great idea. See for bracelets with different themes that circulate in the community that grows around the bracelet. Each woman picks a bead to add to the bracelet and shares why she chose it.
