Urban Oases: America’s Safest Cities

By The Staff at Fabulously40

Big cities are exciting, there's no argument there.  The excitement, culture and big-city lights always seem to entice and draw you in to be a part of the action, all that vigorous activity comes with the price of safety.  Not all big cities are glowing death traps, in fact, there are quite a few that top the list as safest cities, as ranked by Forbes.com this year.

First and foremost, the Midwest gets the last laugh.  Minneapolis is hands down the safest city in America, with the lowest rate of workplace mortality, low-risk for natural disasters, low crime rate and low traffic accident fatality rates—all within the top ten of the safest cities for these categories.  The Twin Cities offers comfortable, scenic living in a bustling city for relatively inexpensive living costs.

Other big names in safety included Boston, Seattle, and Portland Ore.  These cities all ranked low for risk of natural disaster, workplace violence and traffic accident mortalities, the last of which can at least partially be attributed to the city's well laid-out system of underground public transport.

Lowest on the list was Miami, with a rather heavy crime rate and proneness to natural disaster, Miami may be one of the most culturally rich cities of America, but it can't be called the safest.
