We were out with our friends the other night and were discussing our latest strategies for keeping our budgets in line food wise.  They‘re from the mid-west and said that even though they’ve been here for almost 5 years they still live in that “gear up for winter” mentality.

Those in the mid-west and east know the drill:  stock up with anything non-perishable from literally soup/water to canned veggies and tuna/chicken for the times when the weather is so bad you can’t get to the market.

While dh and I,coming from the land of mild weather shop with the mentality of “buy it when it’s on sale“.

Where our friends are stocking up on canned goods-our freezer looks like Fibber McGees closet!

DH and I were in a local market that had Angus 95% lean beef on the clearance section for $2 for 2 pounds.   We bought what we could.  DH stopped at another local market that advertised fresh Atlantic salmon for $4 a pound, he came home with about 6 packages of that.

We also have a local debacle happening here with a new market that is closing up.  Prices were still too high, except on gourmet coffee which we bought what we could at a mere $3.99 a pound-normally it’s $9.99!

Our real buy though had nothing to do with humans!  It was for our beloved tabby Pepper.  He’s on a special diet and the type he’ll eat is usually about $.55 a can and he eats about a can a day + dry food!  Turns out that the market was now down to 60% off the cans-so dh and I took everyone that said the ash content was under 3%!  Instead of the usual price, we wound up paying only $.22 a can!

Can you see me doing the “woot, woot” dance?????

Anyone want to share their latest market specials????

Love it
