Q & A

Help!!! everybody thinks I am crazy. For he past two and half years I get severe bone and muscle aches followed by severe chills, so bad that I can stop shaking or teeth chattering until I get into a scalding hot bath. Then a couple of hours later I am burning up and the bed is soaked. I also have a low fever during all of this (101) this will last for about 48 hours and then its gone, but I cant function during these episodes, then about a week later my period will start. Then I still kept getting these symptoms when I  should be starting my period , but it only came about every 3 months, Now I am back on schedule better than I was in my twenties. My doctors have run every test and they tell me I am fine. My co-workers think its all in my head. Has this happened to anyone else?

Have you had your thyroid tested? Doctors often do only the simplest blood test for thyroid and it doesn’t show up as abnormal in many people. They have to do a comprehensive blood test and look at TSH and more. An improperly functioning thyroid gland can make you run hot and cold like that. The thyroid has a lot to do with hormone regulation. Your doctor may need to put you on a low dose of thyroid med, then do another blood test. They can tell a lot by how the thyroid responds after a short treatment with a low dose of medication. My doctor tested me, had me on a low dose, tested me again and has now upped the med to the next dose. I’m feeling better.

    • The first thing I would do is have a saliva test done to see where my hormones are, especially given that your periods are irregular. This could be the beginning of perimenopause but it sounds very uncomfortable.

    • Have you had a full physical?  If not, go see a licensed naturopath.  Sometimes a gyno will want to medicate you, but a naturopath with try to actually heal.  I am so sorry you have these problems.  I had miserable periods for years and a lot of it was due to my diet and nutritional deficiencies.   I changed a lot of my eating habits and I am now happily uterus free for 5 years and I love it!

Hope you find out what is going on and feel better!

    • I thank you all for your help and well wishes, I went to a different doctor, she took so much blood I thought I was going to pass out. They are going to test my hormones, thyroid and also for vitamin D deficiency and Lupus among other things. I have a good feeling about this doctor. She listened to me. The fact that I was blubbering the whole time probably helped. I have hope again. I have always been a very active person ( 4 kids,2 grand kids) and this has just floored me. I am going to have a positive attitude and get moving. I will let you know. Again Thanks
